Gifts for Minimalists

HEN YOU CALL A PERSON A “MINIMALIST,” you’re describing their interest in keeping things very simple. A minimalist prefers the minimal amount or degree of something, according to vocabulary.com.

In 2018, wildfires ravaged across the state of California. Lives were lost and thousands of homes, schools and businesses were destroyed. From that day forward, affected families were surviving with minimal possessions. For some, the self-assigned title of “minimalist” came to mind.

Returning to their homes amongst smoldering embers, they saw what was left of their belongings… belongings that were now mere ashes. Families had the emotional task of sifting through the ashes, ever hopeful they might find important and meaningful possessions. For many, they came to the realization that possessions no longer had the highest worth and instead the most valuable gift is giving loved ones your time and undivided attention. The notion that, “Presence is the best present” truly rang home for them.

“There isn’t anything inherently wrong with owning material possessions. Today’s problem seems to be the meaning we assign to our stuff: we tend to give too much meaning to our things, often forsaking our health, our relationships, our passions, our personal growth, and our desire to contribute beyond ourselves.” – Joshua Fields Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus
